What’s the inspiration behind SimplePractice?
To put it simply, we’re inspired by the work health and wellness professionals do and we want to help them start, run, and grow their businesses.
Trained as an MFT, SimplePractice co-founder Howard Spector set out to start his own private practice. At that time, he could not find software that was both flexible for his unique needs as a therapist while still keeping him in control of important tasks like client communication, scheduling, and billing. Drawing on his years of experience leading software teams and running his own small businesses, Howard set out to create a platform that was unique for him and his peers. He teamed up with co-founder Ralph Zimmermann, a technologist with deep experience in security and mobile applications.
With a multidisciplinary approach they focused on smart design, HIPAA compliance, and automations specific to health and wellness in order to create a system that keeps you in control of every aspect of your business while still providing the flexibility you need to run your unique health and wellness practice from anywhere: desktop, tablet, and smartphone. Any challenges the company has faced and been able to overcome?
Everyday we face the same challenge as other small businesses: deciding how to prioritize our resources. Time and effort are finite, and everyday we’re forced to prioritize what we work on and build. Since we’ve launched, we’ve focused on speaking with and listening to our community of customers in order to understand the best way we can serve the health and wellness community.
What sets our Customer Success team apart from others?
Everyone here is excited and passionate. All of our Product Specialists come to work every day because they care about helping our customers help other people. It’s amazing to see the impact we make for our customers’ practices and success. Additionally, we understand the complexities of running a business- which includes insurance billing. Our customer success team is especially unique because we have a team of Insurance Specialists dedicated to helping customers successfully navigate the insurance landscape and maximize received payments.
Our team also values the importance of building a community for our customers. We now have a dedicated Product and Community specialist who is helping the company expand community engagement efforts to offer customers access to a professional network of colleagues.

How have customers and our community helped define the product roadmap?
A good idea can come from anyone—engineers, designers, product specialists, etc. But a lot of great ideas come from our customers. Feedback and insight from our community is something we’re constantly trying to gather. On a weekly basis, we’re speaking with customers through email, one-on-ones, and interviews. All that insight and data makes our product even better.
How does the SimplePractice team engage with customers for feature requests and product feedback?
We have an Early Adopter Program where we regularly talk with customers about how they run their practices, and inform them of new features we’re building. Additionally, we collect data from surveys we send to customers, and love directly connecting with customers who answer those surveys to dig a little deeper into their experience.
Hearing from our community is really important. We host focus groups as well and have usability testing, which involves sharing a prototype of a new feature with a group of customers to see how they interact with it.
Any updates customers should look forward to that are coming up soon?
At SimplePractice we’re constantly focused on providing value to our customers. We’re hard at work building out new features and and enhancing our product. We’ve also created a Product Roadmap to provide insight into what we’re planning and more advance notice of upcoming feature releases. Some features include:
- Improvements around managing patient relationships for parents and minors
- Introducing unit billing for more clinicians to have more flexibility in billing for different types of appointments
- Introducing telehealth to our platform for clinicians to provide video sessions
